Anambra State Police Command says it has arrested a suspected member of kidnap, robbery and car snatching syndicate in Okpoko, Ogbaru LGA.
The command’s spokesman, Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.
According to Ikenga, the 43-year-old male suspect, was allegedly a member of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra.
The statement said, “Police operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad Awkuzu arrested another criminal gang member, male, 43 at Okpoko, Ogbaru local government in the early hours of Wednesday.
Ikenga said, “During the operation, the operatives recovered one AK-47 rifle, one pump-action gun, two AK-47 magazines, 88 rounds of ammunition, two face masks, and two hand gloves,” he said.
He explained that the feat was achieved following the confession of one of the gang members who has been in police custody.
The police spokesman in Anambra, also said the suspect confessed how they handed over their firearms to the first suspect for safekeeping after each kidnapping operation.
He said that the first suspect admitted receiving returns from the proceeds of ransom collected from kidnapped victims.
Mr Ikenga added that the suspect was assisting the police to apprehend other fleeing members of the gang and possibly recovering additional firearms
