As part of measures to stop the continued exploitation and extortion of students by lecturers, Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, Abia State, has banned the sale of text books by lecturers.
The citadel of learning also banned the compulsory buying of text books from lecturers.
Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic has also intensified efforts to rid the institution of corrupt staff.
Rector of the Polytechnic, Dr. Christopher Okoro, made the disclosure during a pre-convocation press briefing held at the Umungasi campus of the institution.
Dr. Okoro informed that anyone found contravening the order, would be shown the exit door.
Speaking on whether the ban will negatively affect the lecturers’ output and by extension, retard teaching and learning in the poly, Okoro said lecturers were not in the first place employed as book sellers but as teachers to impact knowledge to students.
He said, “The lecturers were not in the first place employed as textbook sellers, but teachers to impact knowledge to students.”
While assuring that no lecturer would suffer any deprivation as a result of the ban since Government is paying them salaries and other allowances as and when due, Okoro also disclosed that the management under his watch has made the learning and acquisition of skills compulsory for every student of the polytechnic before graduation.
He explained that time had gone when students depended only on their certificates to fend for themselves, emphasising the need for the students to learn skills that will make them become self-reliant on graduation.
The Rector informed of the management’s efforts to clear backlog of certificates and mobilize students for their National Youth Service, revealing that he has signed and issued over 30,000 certificates to both National Diploma and Higher National Diploma graduates from January till date.
Speaking on the institution’s academic performance, Okoro stated that 17 new programmes have been introduced by the institution as AI programme has been accredited, stating that the Polytechnic remains the only institution in the country presently offering AI as a course.
He appreciated the federal government for the various interventions in the polytechnic, especially in infrastructure and disclosed that lectures would commence at the institution’s permanent campus at Osisioma on January 6, 2026.
Okoro also thanked Governor Alex Otti for what his administration has been doing for the institution, including the construction of 10,000 student capacity hostels (5,000 each) for both male and female students, adding that the governor of the state has also approved the asphalting of the permanent site internal roads, as well as the internal roads of the Umungasi campus.
