Ahead the November 8 Governorship election in Anambra State, Yiaga Africa has spotted likely gaps that might affect the credibility of the November 8, 2025, Governorship election in Anambra State.

Director of Programs, Yiaga Africa Cynthia Mbamalu, who raised this concern at a consultative roundtable with media leaders on the Citizens’ Memorandum on Electoral Reform, held in Abuja, enjoined the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to increase its engagement with stakeholders to be able to achieve its goals.

Southeastposts reports that the event, supported by the European Union through its Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) programme, brought together stakeholders in media to discuss how to reform Nigeria’s political system through its citizens.

During the engagement, the Executive Director of  International Press Centre,IPC, Lanre Arogundade, said an analysis of the challenges facing elections in Nigeria, including the numerous disputes that arise during election cycles, indicates that these issues often result from weaknesses in electoral structures .

“Recent improvements in Nigeria’s election management—like using technology for accreditation and voting with BVAS, and empowering officials to refuse to sign results under duress—are outcomes of reforms championed by civil society organisations and non-state actors.

“The EU-SDGN cohort played a leading role in advocating for these significant changes during the first phase of the programme.

“The situation described above relates to the current initiative, which aims, through the citizens’ memo, to support the consolidation of democracy in Nigeria by maintaining previous progress and inclusively promoting electoral reforms, he said .

Dr Tony Onyima, a senior lecturer, Paul University Awka and Former Managing Director Sun publishing company while making his presentation, opined that the media has a lot to contribute in electoral reform of the nation.

He tasked journalists to move out of their comfort zones, doing more of investigative journalism to set the lawmakers on their toes.
