Police in Enugu State have confirmed the death of 10 persons in two separate road accidents on Wednesday along the Ozalla-Four Corner axis of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway.
It was reported that a trailer belonging to Dangote Group on Wednesday crushed an entire family at Four Corner Junction in Enugu State.
Meanwhile, Police spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe in a statement, hinted that the first crash occurred around 9 am when a Howo truck laden with bags of cement and marked Visco Investment Global collided with a Toyota Corolla attempted to overtake another vehicle.
The statement added that a Foton bus and a Daihatsu Hijet minibus, both driving against traffic, were also involved.
According to him, the truck’s head and the Corolla went up in flames, killing all five occupants of the car, while one passenger in the minibus also died.
He also informed that another accident occurred around 3 pm when a Sino truck belonging to Global Investment rammed into a tricycle while driving against traffic from Garriki, Enugu, to Nenwe in Aninri LGA.
Ndukwe said the crash killed the four occupants of the tricycle, who were later confirmed dead at the hospital, adding that ten other victims from the two crashes are currently receiving treatment in hospital.
Reacting to the development, Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, while commiserating with the bereaved families, described the accidents as avoidable.
He directed the State Motor Traffic Department to investigate the incidents and warned motorists to obey traffic rules, especially during the Ember months when accidents are more frequent.
