Reaping from Someone’s Labour is Bad ~ Soko Soko

Fast rising Abia and Ibeku born musician, Prince Obiano popularly known as Soko Soko, says it is disheartening to idly stand and watch people pirate or reap from the stress of others, calling for an end to all forms of piracy in the music industry.

Obiano who specializes in highlife genre, emphasized that even as music has almost same language, it is pertinent for artistes in the music industry to be creative not minding where they got their ideas from, stating that piracy has become the order of the day.

Speaking to newsmen in Umuahia, the State capital on Tuesday, Obiano who acknowledged that the language of music may be intertwined, advised artists not to claim ignorance of the existence of a particular lyric done by other artistes, insisting that ignorance of the penalty attached to piracy is not an excuse in the court of law.

“I wouldn’t want anybody to take what I have laboured for. Though music speaks a kind of language, sometimes you can get something that looks like it, but it is not. If I could use interwoven, you wouldn’t want to try and copy what somebody had already done. You just copy to bring him down.”

On the attitude of Igbos in supporting musicians of Igbo extraction, Prince Obiano, revealed that the support he gets from fans is massive, acknowledging that Igbos need to do more to support their own in the industry just as other tribes.

The highlife musician who stated that music in Nigeria provides opportunity for people to communicate the ills in government and society, also added that among the masses, they have been accustomed to listening to good music, insisting that being a highlife musician makes him fulfilled having spent 10 years in the industry.

“Highlife is fun. A lot of people are into highlife which is also why I chose the genre. I believe that one should not hesitate to embark on something that he has passion for. If it is not a genre that people are venturing into, I wouldn’t have wasted my time doing it.

Obiano who has many tracks to his name, including Ihe Ruru Anyi, among others, assured his fans that the days of sitting on the fence is over, saying he will release more songs from his collections to quench their high demands just as he stated that he gets inspiration listening to Late Chief Osita Osadebe’s songs.
