Abia State Police Command says it has decimated a notorious kidnapping gang and recovered 6 AK-47 rifles and other exhibits.
According to the Command, the feat is part of ongoing efforts to curb kidnapping incidents along Umuozo Village, Uratta Road, off Port Harcourt Road.
A statement made available to newsmen on Monday by the Public Relations Officer PPRO of the Command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said a joint tactical team of Abia State Police Command, leveraging on credible intelligence, stormed a kidnappers’ den located at Umuiku Obete Village in Ukwa West LGA who were linked to series of kidnappings in the aforementioned area.
According to the statement, the notorious gang, upon sighting the operatives engaged the police in a gun battle, adding that when they were unable to withstand the superior firepower of the police, five members of the gang were neutralized.
DSP Chinaka revealed that items recovered included: Six AK-47 rifles, 335 rounds of live ammunition, fourteen magazines, five handsets, three cutlasses, five operational jackets, one axe, one boot, and one polo charms were recovered, adding that investigation is ongoing to track and apprehend other fleeing suspects of the gang.
In a related development, the Command also hinted that in a separate operation on August 2, 2025, officers of the Arochukwu Divisional Headquarters recovered a double-barrel long gun at Amuvi Village, Arochukwu, informing that investigation into the circumstances surrounding the recovery is ongoing.
Speaking on the feat attained by his men, DSP Chinaka quoted the Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, CP Danladi Isa, to have reiterated the commitment of the Command to eradicate crime and all forms of criminality in Abia State.
CP Isa urged residents of the State not to throw caution and vigilance to the wind, soliciting their support just as he enjoined them to report anyone with gunshot injuries or any suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency lines below:
