Some Traders at the Timber Industrial Market, Umuahia on Tuesday escaped death by whiskers when a trailer loaded with timber fell as it tried to find its way into the market.
Southeastposts reports that tricycles and other property worth millions of naira were destroyed in the sordid development.
Narrating the development to newsmen, traders who lost their tricycles and food items in the unfortunate incident, including Mrs Helen Onwuegbu and Oluchi Asoha, thanked God for saving their lives, decrying the level of destruction inflicted on them.
They blamed the incident on bad road network in the market, saying that incessant flooding in the Industrial Market has become a source of worry to traders and customers.
Interacting with newsmen, the President of Umuahia Timber Industrial Market, Sir Luke Ufomadu, thanked God that no life was lost in the incident.
He used the opportunity to draw the attention of the State Government to the erosion and incessant flooding in the Umuahia Timber Industrial Market that has hindered access to the entrances and roads in the market.
According to Ufomadu, accessing the market has become difficult for vehicles especially heavy duty trucks, emphasizing that it is hard for the trucks to navigate their way into the market seamlessly.
He appreciated the developmental strides of Governor Alex Otti in the State, especially in relation to infrastructure and appealed to the Governor to extend the gesture to Umuahia Timber Industrial Market, stressing that they are in dire need.
On his part, the Chairman, Building Material Section of the Industrial Market Umuahia, Mr Onyemechi Ndu, expressed optimism that the Governor will come to their rescue in Timber Industrial Market Umuahia by fixing the dilapidated road network and damaged drainage system that has militated the smooth operations in the market.
Mr Ndu described Governor Alex Otti, as a leader who listens to the plights of the people.
