A chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Hon. Dennis Adikwuru, says the movement of Chief Emeka Ihedioha, former governor of Imo State, to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) poses no threat to the opposition party in the state.
Adikwuru, who was a member of Imo State Presidential Campaign Council under Media and Publicity Sub-Committee in the 2023 elections and former State Publicity Secretary, Imo State Professionals for Atiku, maintained that, since Ihedioha quit the PDP long time ago, Imo PDP had forged ahead without him.
Speaking in an interview, Adikwuru, the Imo State Co-ordinator of PDP Grassroots Movement, emphasized that there was no way the ADC would swallow the state chapter of PDP as the former governor’s recent political sojourn could not lead to mass defection from PDP to ADC in Imo State.
He said, “Ihedioha is entitled to his choice of political association and he is exercising that fundamental right. If he decides to join ADC, that will place him on a political road map, especially since he has been out of the political scene for a long time. In truth, Ihedioha will be linked to a political platform upon which to fall back.”
The PDP chieftain did not comment on whether through ADC, Ihedioha could regain the lost ground and win the trust of his former supporters who he abandoned while leaving the PDP.
“Honestly, I cannot comment on that because I belong to PDP and will work for the victory of my party’s candidate. But I can tell you those Imo electorates are looking towards a new face.”
Adikwuru stressed that ADC, though now the new bride of the coalition at the federal level, cannot pose a threat to PDP in Imo State.
He stated: “The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is a mass movement. It is like the Roman Catholic Church. You hardly will feel the absence of any member of the congregation.”
