Monthly Sanitation: Operation Clean up Your Gutters, Drains Records Partial Compliance in Umuahia

The Abia State Government says it has been working tirelessly to improve environmental cleanliness in the state with the sanitation exercise being a key part of these efforts.

Answering questions from newsmen shortly after monitoring the month of March Environmental Sanitation exercise themed “Operation Clean Your Gutters and Drains”, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Ikechukwu Oriuwa who spoke on behalf of the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Philemon Ogbonna, said the harmonized task force would hit the ground running to ensure residents comply with the policy of keeping their environment clean.

According to him, the exercise themed, “Operation Clean Your Gutters and Drains” aims at ensuring full compliance in environmental cleanliness adding that the days of grace were over, stressing that going forward, the State would now deploy, “Stick and Carrot” in enforcement.

He however, expressed satisfaction with the turn out of people to observe the exercise, just as he expressed optimism that the coming days, months would be better in terms of environmental cleanliness, saying that the government expects to get to a level where there would not be need to enforce compliance during sanitation.

On his part, the member representing Ohafia South State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, and the House Committee Chairman on Environment, Hon. Mba Kalu Nwoke, described the exercise as fantastic.

He noted that there has been remarkable improvement in clean-up exercises in the State unlike what was tenable in years past where successive administrations played with sanitation exercise in the State, expressing optimism that it will get better.

According to the Magistrate at the Mobile Court, Magistrate Onyinyechi Ibekwe, thirty four defaulters were arrested during Saturday’s monthly sanitation exercise for the month of March. Out of the number, four persons were discharged on health grounds.
