Hit-and-run Driver Knocks Man Down in Umuahia

A yet to be identified man, believed to be in his late 50s, was hit down by a hit-and-run driver along Umuwaya by Eket street Umuahia, the Abia State Capital on Saturday.

The incident which happened around 9am while the Sanitation exercise was ongoing, attracted a large crowd of sympathisers including witnesses, who described the incident as unfortunate just as they blamed the driver of the Prado Jeep for over-speeding.

Some of the witnesses who spoke to Southeastposts, said the man was a tipper driver and was hit down by a driver of a Prado Jeep, adding that the driver of the Jeep had a plate number but it was difficult to track him down because he was on top speed.

When Southeastposts reporter arrived the scene, large crowd of people surrounded the
victim who was in critical condition but still breathing just as there was efforts to rush him to Federal Medical Center, FMC, Umuahia.

Meanwhile, in a bid to ensure he was revived, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Mr Ikechukwu Oriuwa, mandated that he be quickly rushed to FMC, Umuahia.

Reacting to the incident while addressing newsmen after the monthly sanitation exercise, the member representing Ohafia South State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Kalu Mba-Nwoko, discarded the insinuation that the hit-and-run driver was a government official, stating that the current administration in the State does not use Prado Jeep and there is no way it can be a person in the administration that hit down the victim.
