Imo State Governor, Sen. Hope Uzodimma, has condemned the moral decay at Imo State University (IMSU), charging its governing board to find practical solutions to the institution’s deep-rooted problems.

Sen. Uzodimma made this appeal while receiving the chairman and members of the university’s governing board at the government house, Owerri, on Tuesday.

He decried the high level of corruption in IMSU, insisting that the status quo must change. He said, “What is very endemic is corruption and lack of staff commitment.”

The Governor criticised the practice of admitting students who struggle to graduate within four years, calling for an investigation and a more structured admission process.

Mr Uzodimma further urged the board to develop a work plan to encourage investment in IMSU and tackle moral decadence by prioritising student welfare while assuring the board that his administration was ready to support the university and provide staff incentives, provided the institution maintained a conducive environment for investors.

Uzodimma who stressed that a well-functioning system would attract investors through Public-Private Partnerships, boosting revenue and benefiting all parties, advocated automation and computerisation to improve accuracy in student enrollment records and staff payroll management.

He urged the board to conduct a needs assessment to determine IMSU’s operational costs and revenue potential for financial stability.

Earlier, the chairman of the IMSU board, Philip Ogbonna, thanked the governor for his appointment and updated him on the board’s progress since January 2025.

Mr Ogbonna revealed that the board had conducted assessments and gained insights to elevate the institution’s standing.
