Just In: ASEPA Reveals New Rates, Tarrifs for Schools, Military, Paramilitary Churches, others

Abia State Environmental Protection Agency, ASEPA, has announced monthly review of rates and tarrifs for Schools, Churches /Religious Institution, Government/Military/Para-military offices and residents while taking into congnizance: property size, vis-à-vis small, medium or large sizes.

Also affected by the new rates and tarrifs include:Higher Institutions, Banks and financial institutions, eateries, hotels, restaurants, hospitals/maternities/morgues, health facilities/pharmacies, petrol/gas stations.

Addressing Journalists on Tuesday at the ASEPA office in Umuahia, the General Manager’ Abia State Environmental Protection Agency ASEPA, Mazi Ogbonna Okereke, said the new rates and tarrifs, is in line with the approval made by the Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti in an executive order for the review of rates and tarrifs of revenue collection by the Abia State Environmental Protection Agencies.

ASEPA GM stated that Small and medium scale businesses, factories/manufacturing companies, mechanic/auto repair workshop, supermarkets, departmental stores/malls e.g (ShopRite, Market Square) are also affected by the new rates and tarrifs.

There is also new rates and tarrifs for rooms, self contained apartment, 2 or 3 room flats, semi-detached duplexes, mansions, shops, single owner compounds, shops/stalls in the market among others.

The ASEPA GM noted that the increment in rate and tarrif, applies to all the LGAs where the job of the Agency is being felt including Umuahia, Aba and Ohafia, adding that it took effect 1st of January, 2025.

He said the job the Agency is doing cannot be overstated, stressing that in a bid to discharge their duties creditably, Governor Alex Otti has approved this order for the smooth discharge of their duties.

Mazi Okereke said the Executive Order may be cited as the ASEPA rate and tarrif review 2024, noting that the rates and tarrifs are the lowest anyone can get in the South-East geopolitical zone, reiterating that a whole lot was taken into consideration to avoid Abians viewing it as outrageous.

He also revealed that plans are underway to ensure that Abia gets to the level of making wealth out of waste disposal as tenable in developed countries of the world, stressing that the Agency is doing a lot in terms of providing receptacles and buckets.

The ASEPA GM also stated that the Agency has been up and doing in evacuating refuse sites in the State, emphasizing that since the Agency has been saddled with these responsibilities, it’s only wise for there to be a review in rates and tarrifs.

He also used the medium to advise the public to desist from disposing refuse inside drainages or lands, stressing that it is an offense just as he thanked the media for their collaboration in making the work of the Agency easier.

Below is the detail of the new rates and tarrifs.

Mazi Okereke, stated that structures not included above would be treated based on nature and type of structure, usage, volume of human traffic, business type, among others, adding that half of the rate above would apply to locations outside the two major towns of Umuahia and Aba.

Correspondent reports that ASEPA DGMs for Umuahia zone, Catechist Jonah Ambrose, Aba zone, Elder Ezenwa Okezie, Ohafia zone, Peter Ekekwe were present at the briefing.
