Abia State Government has reiterated her earlier announcement that the prohibition of burning of tyres on roads whether federal or state owned, is still in force and that the Government will deal decisively with those found defaulting this directive.
The Abia State government pointed out that Individuals or groups found violating this order will face prosecution as specified by the law.
A press statement made available to newsmen on Sunday by the Honourable Commissioner for Environment, Mr Philemon Ogbonna, noted that
the government has observed that despite various appeals to Abians and residents to desist from burning of tyres as a way of celebrating the yuletide and ushering in the new year, certain individuals still indulge in this act in certain parts of the state during the ongoing Christmas celebrations.
The release highlighted the dangers associated with this to include causing significant damage to the newly constructed and rehabilitated roads across the state, adding that this practice also contributes to environmental degradation and poses health risks to residents.
Amid all these, the Abia State government said it has detailed security agencies and relevant authorities to monitor compliance with this directive across the 17 Local Government areas of the state while advising parents to warn their wards and children to avoid had I known which will always come last.
The release also urged all Abia citizens and residents to celebrate the New Year in a responsible and peaceful manner, embracing activities that will promote safety, healthy living, harmonious relationship, unity and the development of Abia state in general.
The statement reads: “The Abia state government has observed with dismay that despite repeated calls on Abians and residents to refrain from burning of tyres as a way of celebrating the yuletide and ushering in the new year, certain misguided individuals still engaged in this unwholesome act in certain parts of the state during the ongoing Christmas celebrations.
“As a consequence, the Abia State government wishes to remind members of the public that the prohibition of burning of tyres on roads whether federal or state owned, is still in force.
“Burning of tyres causes significant damage to the newly constructed and rehabilitated roads across the state. It contributes to environmental degradation and poses health risks to residents.
“The Abia State government has therefore directed security agencies and relevant authorities to monitor compliance with this directive across the 17 Local Government Areas of the state. Individuals or groups found violating this order will face prosecution as stipulated by the law.
“Parents are hence advised to warn their wards and children to avoid ” had I known ”
“We urge all Abia citizens and residents to celebrate the New Year in a responsible and peaceful manner, embracing activities that promote safety, healthy living, communal harmony, unity and the development of our beloved state”, the statement concluded.
