Abia State Police Command says it is committed to bringing the perpetrators who attacked Police Officers attached to Honourable Ginger Onwusibe, the member representing Isiala-Ngwa North/South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, to justice.
In a release issued to newsmen in Umuahia on Monday, by the Public Relations Officer of the Command, ASP Maureen Chinaka, the Command said two Police Officers, from the Special Protection Unit (SPU) Base 4, Makurdi Inspector Dunna Jatau and Inspector Bala Mohammed assigned to the Rep member were ambushed by armed assailants while on official duty in Umuahia.
The statement revealed that the Officers were in a Police Toyota Hilux vehicle after accompanying and dropping off Hon. Ginger Onwusibe in Umuahia, adding that on their way, near Umuahia South Local Government Area Secretariat in Ubakala, the Officer’s vehicle was intercepted by armed men dressed in black attire, operating in a Toyota Corolla with tinted windows.
The PPRO stated that the assailants blocked the police vehicle and opened fire, regrettably, Inspector Bala Mohammed sustained multiple gunshot wounds and died at the scene while Inspector Dunna Jatau and the driver escaped.
The release informed that Officers of the Command have already begun search operations to locate the assiliants.
ASP Chinaka said, “The area was immediately combed by officers of the command as comprehensive search operation was launched to locate the attackers. Tactical teams have been deployed to track down the fleeing suspects. Investigation into the incident is ongoing.
The Command called on the public to remain calm, security conscious as well as go about their lawful businesses just as the statement urged people to report suspicious persons or vehicles to the nearest police station.
