In a bid to ensure food availability and security, the Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru says his administration is focusing on Long-term Agricultural Development plan.
Gov. Nwifuru represented by his Deputy, Mrs Patricia Obila at the flag-off of the 2024 Livestock Input and Agricultural Asset Distribution held in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State Capital for benefiting Ebonyi Farmers under the World Bank Assisted Programme, said huge economic potentials exists in the agricultural sector.
He pointed out that agricultural sector has been known over the years for providing huge employment opportunities while it’s role in sustaining livelihood cannot be overstated.
Gov. Nwifuru urged the farmers to exploit the potentials inherent in the sector even as he promised that the state government under his leadership will continue to invest in the sector.
He said the programme is designed to enhance farmer’s productivity, stressing that the programmes would also make farmers improve from the subsistence level to commercial level where Ebonyi will feed the entire Nation the more.
The Governor who stated that Ebonyi rice has been in demand over the years, added that with the flag-off of the programme, it is believed that Ebonyi would widen her food production chain the more, encouraging them to make judicious use of what they have been provided with.
Earlier, the Ebonyi State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mrs. Nkechinyere Iyioku, said Ebonyi is an agrarian state. She urged farmers present to leverage on the opportunity presented by Governor Francis Nwifuru and feed their families, State and nation at large.
Mrs Iyioku pointed out that Ebonyi is blessed with fertile land for agricultural activities and with favourable weather which should encourage hardworking farmers to produce massively to guarantee food security.
She noted that Governor Nwifuru has always harped on the need for everyone in the state irrespective of profession to cultivate at least two hectares of land, stressing that it is mandatory still for everyone to engage in agriculture.
