Ahead the planned nationwide protest, Rt. Hon. Christopher Ogbonnaya Enweremadu, a former Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, has spoken out against the protest slated for August 1st, 2024, advising Abia youths, the South-East, and Nigerians at large not to participate.
Enweremadu, who gave several reasons for this, said he is confident that the Government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu through his renewed hope agenda has been consistent in solving Nigeria’s problems through increment of the national minimum wage, increase in state allocation to various states in the country, recent supreme court judgment on Local Government autonomy and signing of South-East development commission bill, just to mention but a few.
He maintained that in a democratic setting such as Nigeria, it is always good to activate dialogue in every national issue rather than choose unlawful ways that might spell doom for the country.
The renowned economist advised governors of various states to assist Mr. President in achieving good living standard for all Nigerians, while leveraging on so many funds being allocated to them from the federal Government coffers through various means, not forgetting the large revenue from the removal of fuel subsidy.
Enweremadu called on the President Bola Tinubu led federal government to critically look into the oil sector of the economy, as a reduction in fuel price will give Nigerians another lease of life.
The former Speaker expressed optimism that Nigeria will be a better place for all especially with the efforts the current administration is making to improve the living conditions of Nigerians, hence urged protesters to sheath their swords as the protest is not necessary at this time.
